Thomas Tekanapu Rawakata ("TJ") Perenara is a livewire halfback with exceptional talent and a powerful pass. His attacking abilities – in particular his ability to spot and move quickly through the gaps in opposition defensive lines – has long attracted the attention of selectors, together with his quick thinking execution of traditional halfback tasks.
He first represented NZ in the 2011 Under 20s rugby team that won the 2011 IRB Junior World Championships in Italy. TJ plays for the Hurricanes in the Super Rugby competition, having played 111 games in Super Rugby scoring 48 tries and 240 points. TJ is of Te Arawa and of Ngāti Rangitihi descent, and hails from Porirua.
